STUDENT LEARNING MOBILITY

This activity entitled as “Student Mobility” during the Socrates Phase II will continue as the “Student Learning Mobility” within the scope of the Lifelong Learning Programme for the period of 2007-2013.

With the Erasmus Student Learning Mobility, the students enrolled to one of the higher education institution in Turkey which provides formal education and has Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE), have the chance to be a student for 1 or 2 semesters (for 3-12 months) in an academic year at another higher education institution which has ECHE in a European country and to receive financial aid within the programme during their stay. This financial aid will not be paid back and the provision of this aid does not aim at covering all of the expenses of the student, rather helping them with the additional expenses arising from the mobility programme. Selected students can prefer to become a “Non-grant Erasmus Student”.

Erasmus learning mobility can be undertaken within the scope of the Inter-Institutional Agreements (Bilateral Agreement). Institutions announce the call for applications for their students in order to designate the number of outgoing students within the existing agreements. The mobility can only be undertaken between two higher education institutions that hold a EUC and a bilateral agreement. In order to benefit from the student mobility, students must apply to the Erasmus Coordinatorships of their own institutions and participate in the selection process. Each institution designates its own dates for application and selection. The Centre for European Union Education and Youth Programs defines the annual national priorities and the criteria required for the selection of Erasmus students before the mobility period starts.  Higher Education Institutions select their students for mobility in accordance with the selection criteria set by the Presidency of the Centre for European Union Education and Youth Programs.

Throughout their higher education period, students can benefit from the Erasmus learning mobility with grant for once. It is possible for the students to benefit from the program again, but without receiving any grant. Receiving a grant for placement mobility does not preclude the receipt of a grant for learning mobility. For student selection criteria and the amounts of grants, please refer to the Lifelong Learning-National Call for Proposals of the relevant year.

Academic Status, Course Enrolment and Academic Fees

The courses that are to be taken at the host institution and equivalent to the courses students should normally have taken at the higher education institution in Turkey are determined. Such courses and their recognition are recorded and guaranteed under the Learning Agreement signed between the host and home institutions before the exchange period.   The course titles and contents are not expected to be identical, but there needs to be a high level of match between the course contents.  During the application for the Erasmus University Charter, every higher education institution undertakes that they will recognize the courses included in a Learning Agreement signed by both the outgoing students and the authorized persons of the institution. If acted otherwise, the Centre is liable to report the case to the European Commission and this may result in the annulment of the institution’s Erasmus University Charter. In the selection of courses, the students should register for a course load of 30 ECTS credits for 1 semester and 60 ECTS credits for 1 year. To be considered successful, students are required to earn 2/3 of the credits they have taken.  The study terms spent abroad will be considered to have been spent in Turkey for the students, who are deemed successful. Unsuccessful students will continue their study from where they have left before becoming an Erasmus student. However, they will be exempted from the courses equal to the credits they have earned abroad.

Erasmus Students enrol to the universities they study in Turkey; there is no need to freeze the enrolment for the period to be spent abroad. Registration and tuition fees are paid to students’ home institution, not to the host institution. However, the host institution can demand a small amount of payment from Erasmus Students except the registration and tuition fees demanded from its own students. Among such payments can be the membership fee to sport centre or transportation fees, etc.

Erasmus program is Not:

  1. A “language learning” programme
  2. A “full scholarship” programme
  3. A “diploma” programme
  4. A “research” programme
